March 2, 2005 - Grand opening festivities included a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the lobby of the Roberts Lofts on the Plaza: (L. to R.) Tim Reeves, Downtown Now; Alderman Lewis Reed, City of St. Louis; Jim Cloar, Downtown Saint Louis Partnership; the Honorable Francis G. Slay, Mayor, City of St. Louis; Steven C. Roberts, Esq. President, The Roberts Companies, developers of Roberts Lofts on the Plaza; Eva Roberts; Alderman Phyllis Young, City of St. Louis; Jamie D. Roberts and her twin brother Michael V. Roberts, Jr.

Roberts Lofts on the Plaza Revitalizes Historic St. Louis Board of Education Building

by Bob Moore, SLFP.com

ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) March 3, 2005 - The cityscape around the historic Old Post Office in downtown St. Louis has changed dramatically in the past few years. Construction equipment and work crews are now a very active part of the scene.

Over the past several months, the vulnerable Century Title Building at 9th and Locust has been demolished leaving a gapping hole where a new garage will soon rise.

Across the street, the former Board of Education Building, at 911 Locust Street, was spared the wrecking ball. The Neo-Classical 1891 Romanesque Revival building, designed by architect Isaac Taylor, has been renovated into 50 luxury apartments with first floor retail by the Roberts Companies.

In an interview following ribbon-cutting ceremonies, Steven C. Roberts, Esq. President, The Roberts Companies, told St. Louis Front Page that nobody believed that renovation of the 85,000 square foot building could be completed in just eleven months.

"This building was built in the 1890s basically for two purposes which was to serve as the St. Louis Board of Education headquarters as well as the St. Louis Public Library," stated Roberts.

When the Board of Education made a decision to close the building in the 1990s due to a dwindling student population in St. Louis, Steven Roberts and his brother Michael saw it as an opportunity for redevelopment. In early 2003, they purchased the building for $1.3 million.

The Roberts brothers quickly expanded on their commitment to the Old Post Office district. In 2003, they purchased the American Theater, at 9th and St. Charles across from the Roberts Lofts. After major renovations, it will reopen as the Roberts Orpheum Theater. Michael and Steve also purchased the Mayfair - A Wyndham Grand Heritage Hotel at 806 St. Charles Street in 2003.

....

Even St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay has given some serious thought to moving downtown. "My wife and I have actually been talking about the possibility of moving into downtown."

"When you look at a place like this, it really shows you the variety of living spaces in downtown," said the Mayor. "This is a more finished look which is really my style. It has a real unique design and great views. It really is an example of the quality of work and the quality of living spaces that we have. There is something for everybody, regardless of your style or income levels."

"I'm living in a neighborhood that I've lived in my entire life. My parents are close to us. My in-laws are close and it's a great place to be. But downtown is certainly a possibility," said the Mayor.

When asked if St. Louis is getting closer to New York in terms of living space, the Mayor responded proudly, "We are better than New York. I think that we certainly have every bit of variety that New York has in terms of spaces and uniqueness. I think that the quality here is as good or better. Believe me, you don't see warehouse spaces like this in New York for this price."

That would be a good PR move for the mayor - Daley did the same thing in Chicago, moving to the fledgling South Loop area.

Those Roberts Lofts are a real knockout - easily my favorites from the last loft tour.

I guy I know that used to work for the CDA said two years ago he thought the mayor would move downtown. I guess I should start tapping into his psychic powers more often. Complete coincidence, he lives on the same block as the mayor, but I don't think they talk too much, because the mayor is never there.

Nice photos. Is there a website?

I heard the restaurant is supposed to be one new to St. Louis.

affirming news from deb peterson at stltoday.com:

HITTING THE TOWN: Dashing St. Louis Symphony Orchestra Music Director David Robertson, his lovely and talented wife, pianist Orli Shaham, and their sons, Johnny and Peter, have decided to make their local residence the Roberts Lofts at 9th and Locust streets. The Robertsons will keep an apartment in NYC, where Peter, a teenager, plans to continue in school. Robertson and Shaham say they were delighted with the variety of places to live in the St. Louis region but were particularly impressed with the urban revitalization under way in Grand Center and downtown St. Louis. Robertson assumes the maestro's spot for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra on Sept. 1 and jumps right into action with another top local team - the St. Louis Cardinals. He'll throw out the first pitch at the Sept. 12 game and then, on Sept. 15, Robertson will lead the orchestra in a free concert at Art Hill in Forest Park.

Interesting.

The Super of St. Louis Public Schools and now the maestro of the St. Louis Symphony. The Robertses project is picking up some heavies.

A few pictures can be seen on the website link.

Arch City, that link isn't working. But, you make an interesting point. When you borrow a cup of sugar from a Roberts Loft neighor, you never know who will open the door.

This is great news. It sends a nice message to those of the wealthy and cultured who live in the county that the city is a definite living option.

^I don't know. Whatever they get, it's supposed to be a good upscale restaurant.

Good deal. I love the way the Roberts Lofts turned out, so now I'm getting antsy for them to get to work on the Mayfair addition and the buildings they own west of the lofts - not to mention the projects they have proposed for the CWE and north of Delmar!

Looks like they're putting a gym in, looked like too much equipment for a fitness room so perhaps that's what the ground floor will be housing.

Anybody know what the deal is with the retail space in this building? It has been vacant for a (seemingly) long time.

The middle storefront on the south side has an amateurish sign proclaiming "Halo Spa Spring 2006," and there are building permits posted for replacing sprinklers in the basement. The rest still look dormant.

Looks like Locust St. is about to get a shot in the arm. The Halo Salon & Spa is having a grand opening celebration on February 9th according to their message greeting. The salon and spa is located in the Robert's Brothers' The Roberts Lofts on the Plaza Building.

Check out the websites. The Roberts Lofts on the Plaza website is a great view.

Wow have you walked by this property lately ? The state of the sidewalk and overall property is absolutely deplorable. The sidewalk features boarded up storefronts , a dilapidated theater ( Roberts Auditorium ) across the street , and frankly tons of bird dropping strung across the sidewalk. These people are slum lords in sheep clothing.

I Just toured the lofts the other day. VERY NICE!!! I think it might be the best overall quality for a rental I have seen. Another huge advantge is that it has attached parking and you can get 2 spots! Very hard to find...

They are finishing up that huge garage across the street, and overall the surroundings werent bad at all for all the constuction.

It would be fun to get a place in there and face east to watch the Roberts Tower go up. Great for a time lapsed photo :)

They said they will be part of the Loft tour this coming weekend.

Maybe I'm wrong and the apartments are filled but this seems to be another Robert's owned building that hasn't reached it's potential. The location is fabulous - in the center of EVERYTHING downtown. IMHO, this should/could be one of the premier developments in all of downtown.

What impedes retail leasing? How is it that NONE of the retail space is leased?
