I was wondering if anybody else had checked out the new development called "CharlesTowne"? There was an ad in the Folio section of Sunday Post about it. Unfortunately, it looks as though the marketing company they hired didn't check for prior ownership of the domain name before they published the URL for the development. (whoops)

Anyway, the ad makes it sound just like New Town (better name IMHO). From the ad:

"Evoking the romantic spirit and nostalgia that characterizes Historic St. Charles, Charlestowne is going to be something truly different -- a "new light" in the St. Charles area.

- A master-planned community featuring unique villages, each offering their very own distinct home styles.

- Beautiful landscaping and themed design elements reinforcing the "Old St. Charles" ambiance

- Charming canals and water features

- Extensive greenspace with pocket parks, a playground, and lakeside pavilion"

There are 6 builders and they each have their own section of the this development.

Fisher & Frichtel - Attached Townhomes

Bower & Bailey - Cottage Homes

Titan Homes - Attached Villas & Single Family Homes

Consort Homes - Single Family Homes

Jackson Homes - Detached Villas

RK Building Company - Detached Villas

I haven't had a chance to go out to look at the 6 trailers that are parked out there. The space is actually adjacent (not just near) to New Town. From hitting the builder websites, it looks to me (again, my opinion from what I've been able to gather) like just another cookie cutter subdivision as far as layout. A friend of mine did drive out and he said that he did see the area that was being dug out for a lake.

We may try to head out there in the next couple of weeks to see what's up, just wondering if anybody has already done it.

Interesting. I want more info.

Is there no retail/commercial?

If not, hopefully they will be able to walk over to new town.

I find it rather annoying that they try to play this idea off as some sort of unheard of idea and that this will be "unique".

Heh, post the pictures then we can tear them apart.

From what I can tell, by looking at the home builder websites, there is no retail at all. It almost looks like they will have a connecting road into New Town (besides Boshert Road), but I called out to New Town and they told me that there was no street connection between the two developments.

Here is an aerial of their development. None of the builders has posted anything about the homes they will be building there. Although a couple of the builders (Titan comes to mind) say go over to their latest development in St. Peters to view their houses.

Each builder gets their own piece of the development. Here is how the attached townhomes by F&F will be layed out.

I'll track down some more for you all tomorrow. Got to go take care of a crying child now. Ciao.

It's the "E" on the end of Towne that really lets me know its going to be a quality urban development.

phrases like "unique villages" and "Evoking the romantic spirit and nostalgia that characterizes Historic St. Charles" sound like marketing terms to me. With the success of New Town, a lot of developments are going to try and cash in by portraying themselves as similar. So far this doesn't sound any different than most suburban housing developments, with maybe some retro housing styles thrown in.

No offence, but that looks no different than any of the typical crap that is being built in St. Charles.

Do some people really think that Allies=NewUrbanism?

Where is the mixed use? Transect? "A" streets, "B" streets?

They should have consulted with Mr. Whittaker and the New Town folks for design help.

That was pretty much my point. More useless cookie-cutter subdivisions. Only as somebody remarked earlier, they have class because they spell town with an 'e'.

PostMar 02, 2006#14

Called out to one of the builder's sales office. There will be no retail at all in CharlesTowne. There will at least be sidewalks. Apparently their big selling point is that they are adjacent to New Town and people will be able to go to New Town to visit the retail stores/resturants. They will have a lake and fountains, but once again, most of the water features are actually in New Town. They also claimed New Town was being built by a different builder. *BLEH*

With no street connections, I suppose CharlesTowne residents are supposed to cut across cornfields to access New Town on foot.

It looks like they have one street that is going to connect into phase 3 of New Town. At least it dead ends at the point that phase 3 is being laid out. According to the folks in the New Town sales office, there will be a connection sometime in the next 3-5 years.

Hey the marketing people for "Charles Towne" have figured out how the internet works. They published the new URL in the weekend's Folio section now as http://www.charlestownstyle.com. It is just a forward to the F&F website.

We drove out today, but did not go into the construction trailers. There will be a couple of lakes that are joined by a canal. And the streets are laid out in typical sub-division confusion (lots of dead-end courts). The streets are wide with a grass median. Not sure what they are planning to do about landscaping, although when I talked to a sales person on Friday they kept emphasising the extensive landscaping that was going to happen.

There was also an article in the folio pointing out that New Town is a lot closer to New Urbanism that several other projects that claim they are New Urbanism style projects. Hmmmm. Wonder who they could have been talking about.

According to the last information from Whittaker there will be 2 connections into New Town from Charles Towne. Haven't really be out to take a look at Charles Towne since our last visit several months ago. Houses and Condos are going up.
