9th Street between Olive and Pine. Coffee, Gelato, Pastries. Opened yesterday. They have a scooter on the wall.
This sounds nice. This is the type of business I hoped for in the Paul Brown.
I went there to warm up from my 2 block walk from the bus stop
It's nothing fancy, but they were very friendly and I talked with them a bit about the shop. The owner is a Vespa enthusiast, hence the scooter shell on the wall.
The latte was good, but man, I had forgotten how much those coffee places charge! $3 for the mid-size one. Pretty much on par with Starbuck's and the like, but within earshot of my office and filling a nice little space in the Paul Brown. It also has an entrance right into the arcade section of the building. I went for a little walk to admire the plaster and restoration work. It would be so cool to fill the insides of both Paul Brown and the Arcade building with little shops like that one.

The "grand opening" which will ring in the gelato, soups, and sammiches is Friday.
What a great space! That is going to be a stunning block when complete.

Agreed, it's a nice little space in a gorgeous building. It's a long walk from my building, but it was worth the trip because I got to check out the interior of the arcade at the Paul Brown. There is a jewelry shop open inside, but the name escapes me.
It'd be nice if the hours went longer(they close at 4 weekdays, noon Sat.), but there wasn't much street activity around there most likely due to the cold. I think there'll be a lot more going on once the residential in the Chemical, Syndicate, and Arcade-Wright? Bldgs come online. Maybe they'll extend the hours once the garage mahal is completed and 10th is open to traffic again north of Olive.
According to this blurb on the Sauce Magazine website, they'll be adding to the menu come Spring, but I'll be back before then.

* Mod coffee
Espresso Mod, a new downtown coffeehouse located at 210 North 9th Street on the main level of the Paul Brown Building, will be holding its Grand Opening on December 9. A former lead singer and professional race car driver, owner Paul Charsley incorporated his passions into the design of the coffeehouse. The menu will feature a variety of specialty coffees, frappes, smoothies and iced teas as well as salads, pastries and gelatos will be available as well. Espresso Mod plans to expand with a lunch menu, including panini grilled sandwiches, sometime in the early spring.

I tried to go during Festivus but they were closed! I went last week after the CBD traffic study presentation.
They have some new business things to work out such as the cash register. Their behind the counter work area seems a bit small -- the person ringing up the order is right next to the person making the drinks. This might present service issues as they get busier.
I like the big plasma on the wall as well as the scooter decor. I hope they do some sidewalk seating in warmer weather. Windows that opened to the sidewalk would have been nice.

Checked out this place the other day, pretty cool.
They really have done a nice job with the whole ?Mod? theme, they were even playing some Paul Weller (AKA the ?Modfather?) on the stereo and a Bond movie on the flat screen. Next time I go in, am going to try wearing one of my skinny ties and mop-top haircut, see if they give me discount.

Any Formula One fans around here?
I just found out that Espresso Mod will open early this Sunday (6 a.m.) for the live telecast of the Bahrain Grand Prix.
I usually just set my DVR for F1 races that occur at times like this, as it's hard enough for me to get out of bed for 9:00 Mass on many Sundays. However, I've been looking for a place that's open for live telecasts of F1 racing (most races occur in the early morning hours), so I'm thinking about checking this out.

That's really cool, I can't think of any other places that show F1 races.

I am a huge F1 fan......I just moved back to St. Louis a month ago and this is a welcome surprise! I need to come check this out as well.
We F1 nerds should start a F1 thread...

I have these Legos on my desk at home, except I have Schumacher holding the trophy, not Rubens.

love it, love it, love it!
i'm seriously considering going espresso mod. the only thing better than watching f1, is watching it with a bunch of other f1 dorks.
go kimi!

I think I've seen F1 at Flannery's.
BTW, my man Montoya is really holding his own with the "good ol' boys" in NASCAR.

^ Glad you enjoyed it! I wanted to make it there, but after six hours of sleep in a 48-hour period, I kept hitting the snooze button Sunday morning.
Fortunately, I had the race recorded, so I watched it later in the morning before heading to Stella Blues to catch the Cardinals game in the afternoon.
Hopefully Paul will do this again in the future. Some races will be shown during afternoon hours on tape delay later this season on Fox. And others, like the USGP in Indianapolis and the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, run during the afternoon hours anyway, which would be convenient for area F1 fans.
BTW, I heard Bob Varsha's shout-out to the Breakfast at Bernie's crowd at Espresso Mod toward the end of the race. Someone should tell him that only hayseeds and politicians (that often know better but shamelessly try to appeal to outstate voters) say "Missourah".
And, how about that Lewis Hamilton?

I told my buddy Eric about it and he went. Seemed to be a good time. It sounds as if Paul is going to keep doing this...

How cool was that? Except for the Missourah part.

I just wanted to remind F1 fans that Espresso Mod will be open again this Sunday morning. It's my favorite race on the Formula One calendar- the Monaco Grand Prix (Who doesn't love Monaco?). EM will open in time for the pre-race programming, which starts at 6:00 a.m.
Since I always enjoy Monaco, I'm really going to try and make it to EM this time. I hear they've had good times and good crowds for previous races.
FYI, they will open on Sunday mornings for all of the remaining European races. I'm not sure if they'll open on Sunday afternoons for the United States and Canadian GP next month, but I'll try to find out.

If I can get myself out of bed, I'm going to try to make it down there. Monaco is the best race of the year (IMO).

ABC's WWoS used to show it every year (SDD). What channel shows it live?

The Speed Channel shows it live now - F1 used to be on ESPN/Fox before that.

I may get up early and watch it. I think I get that on DISH.
Hey all -- just another plug for how cool this place is, particularily for F1 fans! (and I am so glad that there are a bunch of us in the city!). My husband and I are a little shy about approaching people but we have been at Espresso Mod for the last two races and there has been a pretty good-sized crowd. Hopefully, we will get a chance to meet more F1 nerds like us as we keep attending! My husband and I met Paul a few years back at a BMW drive experience and he mentioned that he was going to be opening up a coffee shop downtown. We started going as soon as he opened and I think my husband goes there for lunch once or twice a week (he works downtown). Paul (and his wife, Alexandria) are good people and I just hope that their coffee shop reflects more of the new businesses that eventually open up downtown (and I am sooooo excited that once we move into the Syndicate that fabulous gelato will be so close!).
