^Which part? This thread covers a few different things in that area.

I recently noticed an additional sign on the Georgian Square corner. A banner specific for Walgreen's stating "Coming Soon" and listing their website/careers.com

Thanks for posting that. I saw that sign yesterday and wondered.

(On the downside, it will be repulsive if that development is now reduced to just a Walgreen's.)

I don't think it is dead... They just put a new large sign up today for the new Walgreens. I think the Walgreens is a go, but the City Market and Starbucks are stalled. (hopefully not dead)

Maybe they're taking extra time to redesign the project to uphold urban design practices.

Or not. Wishful thinking, I know.

my guess is the redesign of the 44 exit ramp onto truman pkwy is slowing things down. one can only image how fast the hwy dept works.

Seems like all properties should have been acquried before any announcement.

The developer probably jumped the gun on the announcement.

As of today, the sign announcing Walgreens is gone. Actions speak louder than signs.

well if this is dead at least we can be thankfull that they tore down some old buildings before taking off. St. Louis needs more green space ... especially vacant lots ....

seriously though ... if this project can't go through what can. Lafayette Square is booming with high dollar places. Its RIGHT NEXT to the entrance to two major highways. A blind monkey could make money on those lots

Maybe the blind monkeys are smarter?

The additional Walgreen's sign looks like it was run over, it is in many pieces on the ground.

Also, Walgreen's is still on the overall Georgian Square sign.

Well, I was just told the Walgreens is now scheduled to open by July of next year. Walgreens has their own developer they use for all of their stores, so they are kind of seperate from the BSI construction. The City Market and Starbucks all have contracts signed, but the 44 on and off ramps need to be changed, which includes getting the a lot of parties involved. Unfortunately, this probably won't be done for a while.

At the Lafayette Square neighborhood meeting last night, Chris Goodson was the speaker of the day. Found out some more info about this:

- City Market & Starbucks are on hold. No idea when they will go in, but probably not for a while given the economic climate.

- Walgreens will be going in soon, and should be up and running in 1Q of 2009.

- Walgreens will be built in a "historic" style, not like a typical suburban Walgreens. They have experience doing this in SC and other SE states.

- The whole plan will be changing to allow more street fronting stores, and reduce the impact of parking.

I like the "street fronting stores" part of that email!

The fact that this won't be a suburban style walgreen's boggles my mind.

After Soulard's Bread Co/Starbuck strip mall (the other stores are still vacant, BTW), I just assumed that this would be like the Walgreens at Chip/Kingshighway. A piece of parking-lot suburban trash......

I am geuinly shocked and in fact, skeptical. Do we have any renderings yet?

Does anyone know of any examples of Walgreens that have been built this way elsewhere? Any photos? Can they be found on Google Streetview?

French Quarter (New Orleans) Walgreens:

(image too big to post)

There's also a cool deco-Greens on Canal Street (just outside the French Quarter):

Matt beat me to it! I was searching to find that Canal St. Walgreens. That store definitely stands out. The one in the middle of the French Quarter doesn't because it blends in with the rest of the neighborhood. I'd love to see how they would get this one to blend in with Lafayette.

Both are links with good examples showing what Walgreens can do to make a building fit in when the community demands it.

See, this is all I ask. I don't expect an architectural masterpiece, just something that comes up to the sidewalk, not a box in a sea of asphalt.

Although one of those mixed-use Walgreen's sure would be nice. 8)
