I love the proposal, but I wish they would build on a parking lot rather than tearing down the Franke Building. The building has style, and there so many parking lots in the area.

RJ York, is this the same hotel that was proposed in another thread? I thought that was Maryland and central...

Now that we know Westin intends fully to be in Downtown Clayton, I think we can completely nix their intentions to build a hotel at the SE corner of Brentwood and Clayton near the UClub Tower. Still, a very strong brand to bring into the area. Great news of their commitment.

^ yep, that University Club tower development with the Westin is dead.

Minor point, but I've been told that the garage/retail on the north side of Maryland will be completed first, Il Vicino and others will move into the new building and then south of Maryland will be built.

RJ York Westin
$110 million
Clayton and Maryland avenues
Status: Needs architectural approval
RJ York Development’s plans for a hotel tower at Clayton and Maryland avenues is moving forward with the signing of Westin in April. Previous plans for condos in the project have been scrapped and the new design, by Clayton-based CORE10 Architecture, includes 245 hotel rooms, a 377-car parking garage, 16,500 square feet of meeting space and nearly 20,000 square feet of retail space. RJ York principal Robert Kramer said his firm is “in the middle of finalizing our financing and anticipate funding in third or fourth quarter of this year.”
Pending architectural review approval from Clayton officials, construction on the 19-story project is set to begin in late spring 2010 and be completed in summer 2012. Tyler Stephens, principal of CORE10 Architecture, said the project’s design is contemporary with traditional elements. “Clayton has a history of traditional architecture, so this is a blend of a modern building that incorporates traditional materials, which means a lot of brick and stone.”
Stephens said the ground level retail space on Clayton Avenue is designed to blend in with existing retail on the street. “Central Avenue is, in my opinion, one of the best retail venues in the city of Clayton, with the pedestrians and restaurants. We do not want to destroy that. Our street level retail on Central is at a scale that’s appropriate to Central with the same heights as the other buildings and awnings.”

^^ Dammit - that sucks hard. Not everyone loved the earlier rendering, but can't we all agree is 100x better?

Yeah, I think the new rendering is okay, but nowhere nearly as nice as the previous one.

big fan of the second rendering.... As of last year this time I thought I'd be able to see 3 towers rising out my windows. Now all 3 (centene, montgomery, westin) have all been shortened

...which would be OK by me. I think the wing thingees are a clumsy add-on, and detract from what could otherwise be a clean, streamlined design.

I think they're the only thing that may make this anything other than a bland box.

Bank foreclosing on site of proposed hotel in Clayton
Premier Bank is moving to foreclose on property in downtown Clayton where R.J. York Development proposes to build a $100 million Westin Hotel.
http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/busine ... enDocument
So would Westin entertain the original proposal to put them at the corner of Brentwood & Clayton? or would the jump ship to the development at Hanley and Clayton?
As far as other hotel developments, I think Drury Inn might have the financial ability to do anything in the immediate future. They seem to do things themselves instead of relying on developers and franchise owners. Might be mistaken. Personally I would like to see them get something going at Kingshighway and I-44 before Eager and Brentwood.

hmmm
Premier Bank has initiated foreclosure proceedings on Clayton property slated for a new Westin hotel.
Developer Robert Kramer, principal Clayton-based RJ York Development, said he’s in talks with the bank to halt the foreclosure set for Feb. 2.
Premier Bank loaned RJ York $8.1 million in 2007 for a new 19-story hotel at the southwest corner of Central and Maryland avenues in Clayton.
“We’re working on a cure with the bank,” Kramer said. “We’re finalizing the financing and everything is still proceeding on our end.”
Kramer said he anticipates closing on financing for the $110 million this month, with construction slated to begin in July 2010 with a two-year construction schedule. The project includes plans for a 245-room Westin Hotel and more than 17,000 square feet of retail space.

I can't really grasp how this project can still be "moving forward" with foreclosure, bankruptcy, and my assumption that there's really no need for more hotel rooms in Clayton. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I figure if there was much demand for hotel space beyond what is available then Clayton on the Park and/or the Daniele would be open. I'd hate to see those two shells sitting idle while someone builds another oversized potential failure on a nice, small-scale block.
Really, I'd like to see the Franke Building redone with some new, smaller offices and/or some better retail at street level. But I guess the building will continue to deteriorate while York spins their wheels until they run out of gas.
