Besides looking ridiculous - *SHOCKING* - they are dangerous, too!

This would be one of my happiest moments in St. Louis. I loathe those things.

Yeah I don't get why so many folks are so keen on those things. When I lived in Shaw I heard some people practically say you couldn't have a safe neighborhood without them.

Yes, but the story actually says that the barricades weren't a factor in this case. I suppose if this serves to highlight how ridiculous they are then that's OK, but I hope the conversation quickly turns to other options. The removal of the sewer planters would be a wonderful symbol of city renewal.

Is the desire to remove all barricades, or just the ones on through streets? We have 2 sewer planters on the end of our dead end street. They don't seem nearly as offensive.

I hope we get rid of them because they are tacky as hell. One place that really stands out to me is the last right turn before getting on I-64 coming down Kingshighway from Manchester. On top of looking stupid, leaves and trash have gathered up 6 inches high.

Here's a quick post on the barricades and plans to replace them with big balls (no, I'm not kidding). Street closures, even "temporary" ones, are difficult to re-open.

Well I'm ever upper-class high society

God's gift to barrier notoriety

And I always block my roadway

So that crime and traffic will fall

The fire chiefs say I've got

The biggest balls of all

I've got big balls

I've got big balls

They're such big balls

And they're dirty big balls

And he's got big balls

And she's got big balls

But we've got the biggest balls of them all

I live on 18th street. The Lafayette side is blocked off by the MOST atrocious barricades ever. They're the standard concrete ones like you'd see on the interstate. Sick.

I pray that someday they are removed. Unfortunately, with Phyllis Young owning them, I'm not confident that they will be.

^ Now c'mon, does anyone actually click links here and read? I'm not saying that Young is going to remove the barricades, but she is open to it....

From the story: "The barriers could soon be gone. Whitrock's alderwoman, Phyllis Young, says the neighborhood will meet Tuesday to talk about the crime, and decide if the barricades should go."

I read that. I've also dealt with her for almost 2 years. I don't have a lot of faith in it. There will be some jawboning then a decision that it would cause too much "traffic" on 18th. Somehow people would skip Truman to meander through Lafayette Square to head downtown. Or something...

^ True. Good point. We should really explore speed bumps, etc. At least on my block I think that people drive faster because it's a dead end. A driver rarely encounters another vehicle and if you've driven down the block then you (think) you already know what to expect when you drive back out. Everyone cites traffic, but isn't the real point the speed of the traffic? And if you can keep speed down then very few people will cut through unecessarily.

they ALWAYS look awful and make the city look worse. I have NO idea why people are in favor of these. look at the Grove.. get rid of them.
