McKee land tied to plans for arena in O'Fallon, Mo.

O'FALLON, MO. — If the city builds it, the St. Louis Bandits will come.

O'Fallon officials are showing interest in a 4,000-seat "multipurpose arena" that would become the new home for the junior league hockey franchise and be funded by a special tax district.

The proposed $35.1 million arena is expected to take at least six months to plan, design and approve, planners say. Construction could take up to 18 months.

The 168,000-square-foot venue would include space for two ice rinks that could be converted for a variety of athletic events, festivals, performing arts, graduation ceremonies or an emergency shelter if necessary.

Why not? 4,000 seats is basically the size of the WashU Field House. Nothing.

For a hockey team that doesn't even draw 2,000 per game? Another venue to compete with the ones we already have.

There's so much damn tax revenue in special districts in this metro area that if just a decent portion of it could be focused on transportation or a comprehensive development plan we would be rockin' as the shining star of the Midwest!

On one hand, a smaller venue seems harmless enough, but OTOH it seems pointless.

I can see O'Fallon's desire to build a multipurpose facility as it isn't exactly brimming with recreational opportunities anyway, but why are the St. Louis Bandits such a big deal for the city to land? I could see if they had a chance at a minor league franchise, but then the Family Arena in St. Charles would be a much more suitable option, and the last franchise there (the Missouri River Otters) ceased operations years ago.

Yes. This is Mckee's idea of economic development -- stealing from Chesterfield.
