Yes, it is probably going to be at the University of Chicago where he taught (and may teach again - he is a young man still) and I know we are not supposed to post Chicago items in this forum. However, this article about officials in Springfield starting to collect items makes me wonder a little. Obama did start his presidential campaign in Springfield and also introduced his Vice President there. And, of course, you have to at least think about the Lincoln Museum and Library. It would be something quite amazing for the Obama and Lincoln Presidential Libraries to be next to each other.

But, even though it is still highly, highly likely it will be on the South Side of Chicago, there are items in Southern Illinois that people ought to start collecting. For instance, I would love to have the "Pinckneyville Coon Club" sign on Rt. 127 South of Pinckneyville that Obama talked about in the Audacity of Hope (I have hunted out of that club before). What other items in Downstate might people want to collect?

I don't care about the Chicago rule, and that's awesome.^

As long as discussions don't devolve into Chicago vs. St. Louis p!ss!ng matches, I'm okay with the occasional Chicago-related topic.

While President-elect Obama will likely choose Chicago (and specifically, the University of Chicago) for his library, I would love to see him pick Springfield since he served in the Illinois Legislature, launched his presidential campaign at the Old State Capitol, and introduced VP-elect Joe Biden as his running mate there as well.

It's been awhile since I've been to Springfield, but I know the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum has brought a lot of attention and visitors to the city. Springfield also has a decent downtown, that, with a bit more work, could really be something for a city that size. Two presidential libraries just might do the trick. 8)

It's also nice to see a Chicago politician (Obama) that clearly has an affinity for Springfield. Can't say the same for Gov. Blagojevich, obviously.

^plus you have the obvious historical significance of having the President who freed the slaves and the first African-American President having their library in the same town.

all that being said it's hard to see Chicago not getting it when the time comes.

Right now I guess California is the only state with two Presidential libraries (Nixon and Reagan). Both in the LA region.
