Went down to the loft district today and saw people working on the inside of a corner shop, I think the addy is 1375 Wash Ave....looks like it will be a deli/coffee shop.

Anyone know about this?

I believe it's going to be an ice cream shop.

Yeah, its gonna be an ice cream shop. They've been working on it (slowly) for several months now, but its getting really close. Looks real nice inside; very warm and welcoming. I think they're gonna have sandwiches and other stuff too. The couple that are running the shop are really nice folks. He's connected with McGowan/Walsh et al.

I work just a couple of doors down. Can't wait for them to finally open.

It seems like something new is popping up every week. I just hope they paint that yellow flower shop next to it. Get rid of that ugly crap. There is no need for it.

I like the idea of them expanding on the ice cream shop. The ice cream alone would have been fine, but adding some sandwich selections makes them a hotter lunch destination.

Speaking of the flower shop building...I heard again that yes, a restaraunt is still planning to open in the western half of the "ugly" yellow building (between Philip Slein Gallery and Kennary Park Florist). From what I hear, they've been paying rent on the space for several months now. Absolutely nothing has happened inside, but they have had architect/contractor types going over the place. I have no idea what's taking them so long. The florist has been using the front windows for extra display space in the meantime.

The ice cream - er, gelato, shop has their new sign up now. Its very retro, with vertical neon letters spelling GELATERIA. Another nice addition to Wash Av lighting. I believe the shop should be open any day now.

Great addition. There seems to be a lot of nice signs going up downtown.

Went in and got some Gelato this evening. Man, these guys are going to clean up. The Gelato is made on premises and they have about 10 different flavors and each one is better than the next. You can taste each one before you buy. They also have Kaldi's coffee and great espressos. They also do smoothies, steamers and desserts. Oh yea, and they do food items for lunch. Watch...by summer you will see lines out the door of this place. Great addition to the neighborhood!

Don't think they've decided, but they're open today (Saturday). The gelato is awesome, as was the mushroom and brie soup.

Open till 11:00 pm during the week and midnight on weekends. Much much better that Espresso Mod which closes like at 4:30 pm every day except Saturday where they close at 1:00 pm. Give me a break.

I understand that Webster University, which is now operating out of the OPO, is talking with Espresso Mod to stay open later for the students, whose classes run until 9:30. I think it will be open later on a trial basis, but not sure when that's starting.

The Gelateria has been expanding their menu of sandwiches, and I've learned they offer Mocafe divinity chai, which I've missed since Farrago closed.

This place is exactly the kind of shop an urban neighborhood needs. I'll have to eat more gelato to, you know, support the neighborhood.

It looks like they will also have a website: http://www.thegelateria.com

Not much there yet...

and the place was packed. Great space and great gelato. It looks like a perfect neighborhood spot to relax and read w/ a cup of coffee (which I have been sorely lacking since the Post closes so early).

My only problem- it's so much smaller on the inside than it looks.

Yah, it could certainly use more seating, and I doubt you could put anything more than a few tables and chairs outside unless you did something along the west side of the building. The place is a hit for sure. Imagine how much busier it'll be in the summer months and when Ventana and Ely Walker are occupied (not to mention loft developments east of 14th). I wish I would have thought of this type of business myself, its a perfect fit.

I visited the Gelateria on Friday night during the First Friday Gallery & Design Walk. I agree with the above comments -- perfect place for the area that is unfortunately too small.

But maybe the small size is good. They can serve gelato to go which will get people walking slowly down the street as they enjoy the treat. This will keep the sidewalk active rather than have everyone inside the businesses. I may have a different view if I want a table to use the wi-fi...

The selection, prices and atmosphere were all well done. Kudos!!!

I drove by it today and was wondering the same thing. Maybe it came loose during the storm the other night.

That's great to see. We checked out the Gelateria on Saturday after watching the Cards' game at Flannery's - the gelato is great!
